Typographic Character as Form

This project was an exploration of iterating different character pairings using composition, contrast, and spatial relationships. The two typefaces used for the character pairings are Bodoni URW and Gill Sans Nova. Both typefaces were set as bold because the heavy weight of the characters were striking, especially with the prominent weight contrast of Bodoni URW. For the first iteration, it explored pairings using both uppercase and lowercase letters of a g i x y. The main intention for this iteration was to create a unique shape for both the negative and positive spaces. Many of the compositions used huge scalings of one character in contrast to another smaller character. The combination of a large and small pairing creates a brand new shape or pattern when looked at from afar. With each step of the iteration, edits and tweaks were made to the composition and scaling of the character pairings which honed in the final 5 compositions.

This second series of letterform pairings are for letter G.
The third series is for letter X.
This next group is exploring letterform pairings for Y.
Lastly, this group is made up of pairings for letter I.
